Taverham Fayre tournament 3 July 2010

Hillside Rovers entered one five-a-side team in the Taverham Fayre Under 7's event, playing five matches on a baking hot day (the gazebo worked wonders again). We had a team of seven boys on the day: Elliot, Joshua, Sam P, Ewan, Jay, Ben and William.

Match 1 result    Reepham 2 : 0 Hillside. Reepham were an excellent side, but Elliott pulled off some great saves, and Josh was strong in defence Match 2 result    Hillside 2 : 2 Spixworth. A very close match and a fair result, Ben scored with a long shot, and William scored number two with a near post turn and shot

Match 3 result    Hillside 1 : 2 Catton. Great effort as the day got hotter! Sam headed the ball away in defence twice to stop Catton, and Elliott scored a magnificent lob.

Match 4 result    Sprowston 1 : 1 Hillside. Team play was great, but Jay played a stormer, scoring a penalty and two other strong shots. Plus another Sam header.

Match 5 result   Taverham 5 : 1 Hillside. Tough game against a great side. 4-0 down at half-time, Hillside had a good second half. Ewan tackled and passed to William, who scored with style. This was another great event where the boys did the club proud. Well done to the 'Magnificent Seven'.

Salhouse tournament 13 June 2010

We had thirteen boys in two 5-a-side teams at this friendly local tournament, an excellent day as a late replacement for the cancelled tournament at St Andrews.

All the matches were keenly contested and fairly even, with our boys playing with energy and skill. The two teams had similar strengths, and both Hillside teams won two, lost two and drew one.

They even met each other, with Hillside Hyaenas beating Hillside Heroes 2-0 with Ben and Fred on the score sheet. Other highlights for the Hyaenas included when Fred scored the equaliser against Lakeford, and Fred again twice against Heigham Park after some excellent passing play with Ben, ending the event on a high note.

William scored Hillside’s first goal for Hillside Heroes against Heigham Park and his and Sam’s goal celebrations were quite something. James was on the score sheet too: bad luck with handball to concede a penalty against Old Catton Tigers, then good luck with a shot that went in through the goalie’s legs. Two goal Hero Joey was on fire in probably the best match of all, a cracking 3-3 draw against Old Catton Cougars, William also scoring.

There was lots of good defending too; tough tackling from Joshua, Sam P, Nick and Jack, plus Sam P many times sprinting back to cover at the back. Ewan and Alex bravely kept goal, with Ben, Elliot and Joey taking turns later. Sightings of buzzard and marsh harrier added interest to the day.

Hillside Heroes:
William, Joey, James, Sam J, Jack, Nick and Alex

Hillside Hyaenas:
Eliot, Sam P, Ben, Ewan, Joshua and Fred

Congratulations to Salhouse Rovers FC for an excellent day and to the referees for their time and care.

Horsford tournament, 2 May 2010

Eight boys represented Hillside Rovers in the annual Horsford Youth FC Invitational Five-a-Side Tournament, and played in a group with five other teams. All games were played on a friendly basis without league tables. The matches proved to be very close, and all teams were very evenly matched, providing the boys with a great day out with lots to tell their other Hillside members next Saturday.

RESULTS: Game 1. Hillside Rovers 6 ( Ben 3, Sam 1, Jay 1, Elliot 1) v 0 Horsford Boys. Brilliant first game, Ben got a hat-trick, and a clean sheet from Alex in goal.

Game 2. Hillside Rovers 1 (Sam 1) v 1 Old Catton Tigers. Very close match. Sam scored with a cool finish, Alex made a brilliant finger tip save.

Game 3. Hillside Rovers 1 (Sam 1) v  2 Sprowston Lions. First defeat, Nick and Jay were superb in midfield making lots of tackles.

Game 4. Hillside Rovers 3 ( Ben 2, Elliot 1) v 3 Taverham Lads. Great draw against an excellent side, Fred was superb in defence, and Elliot scored from long range.

Game 5. Hillside Rovers 0 v 0 Spixworth Youth. Ewan and Jay passed well in midfield, and Alex kept another clean sheet with more great saves.

The boys all had lots of fun, and received a medal at the end of the tournament. Hillside can be proud of their efforts. Horsford provided a great day out with a very well organised event.
