Costessey 1 - 2 Hillside

This was the U9's final game of the season in the U9 Hunters League. So far the table showed 'Hillside Rovers...played 19 Lost 19' It had been a tough season with the coaches contemplating pulling out of the league at Christmas due to the fact that the team had lost players and a coach. However the two remaining coaches decided to persevere and whereas the results were getting better i.e we weren't losing by so many goals, the day of a draw or win still seem a million miles away.

Hillside lined up with Tom in goal, Alex D in defence with Haixin, Sam, Niall & Cameron across the middle and Adam up front. The whistle sounded and the game was under way. Hillside battled away and midway through the 1st half the ball was pinging around in the Costessey area when, with his back to goal and what looked unlikely, Niall did an overhead kick which bounced and due to a well placed Ref it crossed the line! Hillside for the first time ever were in the lead!

This remained so until the last minute or so before the break when a speculative shot by Costessey was just the right height to cause Tom in goal problems and although he tried hard the ball fell into the net, 1-1.

The second half started with Hillside re-arranging the line up with Alex N joining Alex D at the back and Adam replacing Sam. It was a close game but again half way through the half, Finn seized on a ball and just took a few strides then hit it from some 25 yards out. It was placed to perfection and Hillside took the lead again. The remaining 7 minutes seemed like an eternity for the coaches with Costessey pushing for the equalizer and Hillside defending stoutly. The final whistle came and Hillside U9's with their friends & families erupted. It was like they had won the FA Cup!

So the season ended played 20, lost 19 but won 1!

Everyone did so well. It gives us hope.

Thanks
David Carson
