Match reports from friendlies, winter/spring 2010

Friendlies against Old Catton, 15 April 2010

We had four matches of 10 minutes each way - practice for how our matches will be next season - against two teams from Old Catton. Our team strips are very similar: hence the bibs.

Results: Hillside orange bibs 0 - 1 Old Catton Cougars; Hillside yellow bibs 0 - 3 Old Catton Tigers; Hillside orange bibs 1 - 3 Old CattonTigers; Hillside yellow bibs 0 - 4 Old Catton Cougars

Despite losing all four matches they were fairly even and all played in a  good spirit, and we look forward to meeting Old Catton again next season.

Hillside orange bibs: Jay, Elliot, Ben, Oliver, Sam J and Sam P..

Hillside yellow bibs: William, Fred, Angus, Alex, Nick, Jack, Joshua and Harry.

Friendlies against Thorpe Rovers, 17 April 2010

It was warm spring day for our four friendly matches against our very local rivals, hosted by Thorpe Rovers at Dussindale.

Hillside Heroes and Thorpe’s first team started with a very even 0-0 draw, with lots of energy and a comedy moment when goalie Alex kicked the ball over his own crossbar. The Hillside Hyaenas team then had a 2-1 win with two goals from Sam. Some strong Thorpe players helped them to a 0-4 win over Hillside Heroes. The final match saw Hillside Hyaenas win 4-0: the first was a penalty taken by Elliot after a handball, the second was when Fred was quick to seize a rebound and score. Sam came on, beat his man and thumped it through legs for a third and Fred scored his second for 4-0.

But the results are less important than a good morning out enjoyed by all. Thanks to Steve Gale and his team, the Thorpe boys and parents and referee Jason.

Hillside Heroes: Alex, Nick, Sam P, Joshua, William, Angus and Joey.

Hillside Hyaenas: Sam J, Fred, Elliot, Ben, Ewan, Jay, Jamie and Oliver.

Match reports, 6 February 2010, friendlies between Hillside Rovers and Horsford Youth FC

After weeks of snow and ice, with three of the last four weeks' training called off, it was a gloriously warm morning that soon saw off the last of the frost. Our boys were in Hillside Rovers shirts for the first time, so they looked very smart from the waist up - see the team photo below and here. We had two roughly even teams, not A & B, and Horsford did the same, with two 6-a-side matches for each team of six minutes each way.

Hillside Heroes 1 - 0 Horsford

A very even match, with Sam coming on for the second half and scoring the winner.

Hillside Hyaenas 1 - 0 Horsford

Again even, with Elliot scoring for the Hyaenas.

Hillside Heroes 7 - 0 Horsford

Or it may have been 8 - 0 - we lost count. Ben scored twice and Sam at least five.

Hillside Hyaenas 0 - 0 Horsford

At last a draw for Horsford, partly as the rotten ref blew his whistle due to an injured player just as Fred scored.

Hillside Heroes: Angus, Ben, Ewan, Jack, Joey, Nick, Oliver and Sam

Hillside Hyaenas: Alex, Elliot, Fred, Jamie, James, Jay, Joshua and William.

With thanks to our friends from Horsford, who some of us can look forward to seeing again at their tournament in May.

Under sevens, in team shirts for the first time. Who's making all the noise at the front?

Chris Durdin (also the rotten ref for that last match)
